Well we sleep all night out
In the park
The lights are the brightest when it’s
Really dark
Then I wake up just to
Look at you
And you say hey, what you
Wanna do?
And I say …
I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
Yeah I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
Wake up wet all
Damp with dew
Grab a booth for breakfast eat an
Egg or two
Take hot shower in your
Parents’ house
Soak us in the tub to get off
All the dirt
Soak real long so we dont
Have to hurt
Because …
I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
I say I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
Now time crawls by then time goes fast
I pump on the breaks while you hit the gas
Now I’m not sure if I said it or dreamt it
I just hope that you never forget it!
Then we go to the bedroom flip on
Your TV
Pull down the nightshade so we don’t
Have to see
The world outside it’s so …
Confusing man
Pull the sheets over our heads ‘cause we don’t
Give a damn
And then …
I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
One more time …
I wanna get high
With you
Do all the bad things we
Shouldn’t do
Do all the bad things
We wanted to

Illustrated Man
“A man can be honest in any sort of skin.”
–Herman Melville, Moby-Dick, 1851I am an illustrated man.
I got so many pictures that you can’t see me
Guess I’m shrouded in
Mystery
Illustrated man.I got a dotted line
Runs from my head to my heart
I got a jagged line
Tells you how to tear me apart
Illustrated man.Oooooooooooooooooooo, Lord
Illustrated man
Oooooooooooooooooooo, help me
I do the best I canThere’s some stuff over here
And some curly-cues
This one says “Mother”
But she may be lyin’ too
Illustrated man. When I curl my arm
This one here gives a wink
When I clench my fist
That means I got no time to think
Illustrated man.Oooooooooooooooooooo, Lord
Illustrated man
Oooooooooooooooooooo, help me
I do the best I canYou’d better be careful
When I come into view
There’s just no telling
What these pictures might do to you
Illustrated man.Yeah, I’m just an illustrated man.
I got so many pictures, but you can’t see me
Guess I’m buried in
History

Friday Feeling, Again
I feel that Friday feeling
again
Time for staying out late and drinking beer and
sleeping in
Throw off the chains for one more day
Trade in my cage for another day
At least until Monday rolls around
again
Time to try out being someone else
Time to drop by your house and
stay too long
Time to watch TV and hear my
favorite song
At least until they all come home
again
Saturday afternoon and the park is hot
Looking everywhere for someone who’s not
so alone
Sunday comes in like a bad excuse
Ran around all night long with, nothing to lose
but youYeah, it’s just that Friday freedom
again
Time for staying out late and drinking beer and
sleeping in
Throw off the chains for one more day
Trade in my cage for another day
At least until Monday rolls around

Song for Today
I want to take everything
that makes me me
And shove it all
To the bottom of the sea
I want to take whatever it is
that makes me me
Shove it down deep where no one can see
I want to go
Where the bad boys go
I want to do
What the bad boys do
I want to wake up, early today,
Look over at me, then look over at you
I want to live
In the Interzone
I want to smash up my telephone
I want to make
The world go away
I don’t want to hear what you have to say
I want to take everything
that makes me me
And shove it all
To the bottom of the sea
I want to take whatever it is
that makes me me
Shove it down deep where no one can see -
Squirrels
Things are dark, things have . . . gone to shit
I’m just gonna sit here and . . . have a sit
Sit and do nothing for the rest of the day
Yeah, I’m just gonna watch these squirrels playLook at that one, running ’round that tree
Look at his brother, sitting and looking at me
I take my well-earned arguments and all I’ve got to say
And I’m just gonna watch these crazy squirrels playThey don’t go nowhere, but it sure looks like fun
I’d kill anybody who took after ’em with a gun
Don’t care about your car and your fine array
‘Cause all I gotta do is watch these squirrels playI hear the talk on the left and on the right
I hear that shit go down every night
To me it ain’t worth a thing, it’s just a waste of space
About as productive as watching these fucking squirrels playWell at least they have fun, at least they’re digging life
They don’t care about my toil and strife
There’s a black one and a white one in the same damn tree
If I stay a little longer, maybe they’ll play with meSquirrels Audio

Nothing Left to Chance
She said, “Pardon me, may I have this dance?”
I said, “Yes, ’cause there’s nothing left to chance.”
She said, “Why you looking at me sideways, all askance?”
I said, “Well, I just think it’s kinda funny–there’s nothing left to chance.”
We went to a park, we were ready for romance
She said, “Well, I guess there’s nothing left to chance.”
Grandpa’d died that day, he was such a handsome man
I know he’d have said, “Son, there’s nothing left to chance.”
I’d never been there if it weren’t his day to pass
Guess that’s how I know there’s nothing left to chance
I left her in the morning, I had to go on west
She just smiled and said . . . “Yeah, I think that’s for the best.”Nothing left to chance, no, nothing left to chance
You can say it’s all just, happenstance, but I know, I know,
There’s nothing to chance -
Careful With Me
Be careful with me
I’ve set a bad example
Be careful with me
I might tear out your heart
Be careful with me
I may rip down your temple
Be careful with me
I’ll stop before I start
The things I’ve done
I wouldn’t recommend ’em
The things I’ve done
Are advisable to no one
The things I’ve done
Are from the lion’s den
The things I’ve done
Make me the prodigal son
In that old tale
They welcome him with kisses
In that old tale
They killed the fatted calf
In that old tale
They gave him loaves and fishes
In that old tale
They cut the kid in half
So be careful with me
I really don’t know nothin’
Be careful with me
I live by sleight of hand
Be careful with me
My words are really somethin’
Be careful with me
I’ll fill your eyes with sand -
Home Because of You
Nashville is 1,000 years away
And Kansas City seems like yesterday
And everyone we know must have better things to do
But this place feels like home because of you
Yes, this place feels like home because of youAnd all the money that we spent on rent
And all the places it’d be better spent
Like fixing up a basement, or tearing off a roof
But this place fees like home because of you
Yes, this place feels like home because of youI like to spend my days out on the lawn
I like to think about the days that now are gone
I like to talk to puppies, and little babies too
’Cause this place fees like home because of you
Yes, this place feels like home because of you -
Lonely
I am so lonely
I am by myself
I got nobody here
Just me on this shelfWalked downtown today
People just turn away
Every store that I go to
Nothing to buy & nothing to doI say, “Man, ain’t my money green?”
He looks at me like he’s never seen
A man as lonely as I could be
Then he just takes my money from meCome back home again—light’s down low
People all got someplace to go
I just sit in my chair & cry
I just watch the night go byWhen I’m drifting off to sleep
I count myself as I’m counting sheep
That’s one sheep more with nowhere to go
That’s one sheep more than I’ll ever knowI am so lonely
I am by myself
I got nobody here
Just me on this shelf
